DIY House Decor UNDER $10

When we moved in to our house in 2011 we really didn't have much more than a few college posters, a couple framed pictures, and hand me down furniture. I had only been out of college for about a year, and was still working on "growing up" and Porter had ALL his college furniture from the past 5 years that threw up all over our new living room.

Long story short I did everything in our small budget possible to turn our house from college craze to a adorable abode.  I stalk pinterest on the daily and love spending small amounts of money on gently used things at thrift stores. These two things work hand and hand in making a house a home, especially when you don't want to break your bank!

 Before//After
Before//After

Here are some of my Do It Yourself projects that cost me $10 dollars OR less!

1)  "Home is Where the Heart Is"

Supplies:
4 - 4x6 picture frames
1- 8x10 picture frame
colored paper
printer

I googled the letters H-O-M and E, and picked a font I liked for each letter I saved the image, printed on the colored paper at a 4x6 size and placed it in the frame. Repeat for each letter.
In the 8x10 I printed "Is Where The (blank space) is" and cut out a heart and placed it in the blank page for the 3D look.

It cost me $5.00 for the frames at the dollar store, and took me maybe 20 minutes to complete!

2) Engagement Photo Wall

I am a HUGE fan of Michaels coupons, especially the 50% one item. Well I used these to my advantage when buying these 3 picture frames. All of which cost me under $5.00. Especially for a 18X24 matted frame!  When looking for frames I ran into the clearance aisle where I found a outer single frame for $2.00. I picked it up and ran across the store and found the biggest letter "H" that I could.  I painted the creme colored frame brown and painted the "H" red. and placed them both together to match the rest of the frames. I think this is one of my favorite walls of our house! I just love it!

Total Cost: $10.00

3)  "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You"

The other day my friend was cleaning out her house and was discarding an old crappy brown looking frame. I have an obsession with frames and you can do SO much with them in a decorative sense that I asked her if she would mind if I took it, she obviously did not care. I got home trying to decide what exactly I could do with it, and where exactly I should hang it. After touring the house I thought that something was desperately needed above our bed, and I didn't want another framed picture. I went in to my garage sale pile to find a old canvas picture at which I did not want or have a use for anymore.
I painted over it with "Ocean Breeze" blue and painted the saying "How sweet it is to be loved by you". While that was drying I spray painted the UGLY brown frame black to match our bedroom decor, and of course had my handsome hubby do all the center measurements and here we are:

Total Cost: $ 0.00
made completely of recycled items I already owned

4) Garage Sale Bar

We went to a garage sale across the street from a us a couple weeks after we moved in. We had been desperately wanting a bar to store all of our wine glasses, and cocktail items to make extra room in our kitchen. The price of a bar can range anywhere from $300.00 to upwards of $1000.00. This was obviously NOT in our budget. Anyway, at the garage sale we found a gently used cabinet with a lock and key. This was the PERFECT budget bar, and it has worked GREAT for us ever since. I hope one day to upgrade to a bigger better bar, but our garage sale bar works wonders for now!

Total Cost: $10.00

5) Redneck Wine Glasses

You can read the full tutorial of those HERE

Supplies:
Mason Jars- $1.00
Candle Stick Holders- $1.00

Total Cost: 2.00 per glass.

6) Wooden Signs

I have a couple of these placed through out my home for the simple fact that they are adorable, you can have them say ANYTHING you please, and they cost little to nothing to make.

This one was completed using:
Hobby Wood
Paint
Sandpaper

I painted the wood, sanded it to give it a rustic, worn look, and than googled a quote, and handpainted it.

Total Cost: Under $5.00

7) Memory Shutter

I found this shutter in my neighbors trash (seriously I sound like a crazy dumpster diver) I was late to work so I called Porter and told him to MAKE sure to grab it before he left for work because I had the greatest project idea. Pinterest has amazing things to do with old shutters, but I desperately needed something above our huge TV. It looked to bare. So I headed to Michaels (of course) and purchased a wooden wreath to place in the center. I added pictures of us, and a couple of first date memories. I love the rustic look!

Total Cost: Price of wreath (under $7.00)

8) "I love you because..."

I am sure you have seen this idea floating all around pinterest. I have LOVED it and I believe it is the greatest idea especially for newlyweds. It's always wonderful to get those little love notes now and again and this is the perfect way to do it!

Supplies:

8x10 picture frame- $1.00
Marker (dry erase, sharpie, etc.)

I spray painted my frame with spray paint we had in the garage and placed a piece of matching red paper behind the glass. It took me 5 minutes and is the CUTEST message board ever!

There are so many endless things you can do and get the most bang for your buck, and make your house look and feel so much like home!

  2. Wow I love all your little updates!! Especially the rug and the redneck wine glasses haha. I bought my friend a glass like that for his birthday, but instead of a mason jar, it's a solo cup haha. Thanks for stopping by my blog today, I'm looking forward to following yours!

  5. I think I need to start thrifting and visiting goodwill more. I try to be frugal with my crafts, but I bet they'd be even better, and possibly cheaper with good used stuff!!!
